I found this book, Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman, on Goodreads and it sounded oh so good. A possible mystery in Bora Bora?! Yes please! However. It is not really like that. And for that, I was let down and could not give this book a very high rating.

Something in the Water follows a woman who films documentaries and her fiance in England. She is filming the lives of three prisoners who are going to be released soon, and her fiance soon loses his job. The story follows the two as they get married and go on their honeymoon to Bora Bora. The descriptions of this magical and tropical land were amazing, and I was left wanting more and more. But, I didn’t really get that.

The couple leave Bora Bora quite quickly, actually, because the majority of the story, after they find a mysterious package in Bora Bora, takes place in England, really. The couple head back home, and that is where they deal with this dilemma: do they keep what they find, or do they get rid of it somehow? How do they get it gone? What will happen if they decide to keep it?

This sounded great, but the further I got in the story, the less probable the story seemed and the less connected I became to the characters. I liked the little hints at who the characters might have been, because it gave them these really neat dark depths. But, the rest fell flat for me. I think it was a fairly decent debut for this new mystery novelist, but I felt Steadman may not have had as much practice writing, compared to some other killers out there.

I believe I may purchase another book of hers in the future, with the hope that the writing and character development has improved. This book is by far not the worst one I have ever read, considering there are others that received worst ratings from me. But, I truly hope she continues to write because I find that she could churn out something really good in the future.
